University Department To Be Established On Santorini

The volcano of Santorini, considered as one of the most important volcanoes in the world, has still a very vivid activity. Its sea-covered caldera, known as the largest in the world, has attracted the interest of many geologists around the world. Characterized as a global monument of geological inheritage by professor Dimitris Papanikolaou, Santorini has many hidden geological secrets.

To honour and study better the volcanic activity of Santorini, the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Geological Society of Greece have joined hands to open a university department that will be entirely dedicated to the investigation of the volcanic soil of Santorini. This department is also due to introduce special summer courses for foreign geological universities. After all, till now, the Faculty of Geology has conducted a lot of educational tours to Santorini in order to study its special volcanic activity.

The Municipal Board of the island has been in favour of this intention and in fact it has expressed the will to donate a building solely for this purpose. Renowned Professor Efthimios Lekkas also aims to build a museum in Santorini that will showcase the geological findings from the volcanic site.
