Santorini is a picturesque island with a unique Cycladic architecture. The two main villages of Santorini, Fira and Oia, are built right on the edge of abrupt cliffs. The houses are built of stone and narrow, paved roads cross the villages. As the island is mostly mountainous, all streets are up and down. Narrow stairs connect neighbourhoods and lovely balconies give great views to the sea. |
Apart from simple houses, Santorini also has some beautiful mansions, such as the elegant Argyriou mansion. These mansions have been preserved since the Venetian times and were restored in the 1980s. Apart from the mansions, other samples of Venetian architecture in Santorini are the Castles of Akrotiri and Kasteli.
Notable architectural constructions on Santorini are also the churches, spread all over the island. These churches are mostly built in the Cycladic architectural style, which means that they are white and blue in colour, built with stone and marble, with tall bell towers and round domes.
