As in all Cycladic islands, there are many churches spread all around Santorini. In fact, there are about 250 churches of various shapes and sizes in Santorini. They are all outstanding due to their unique architecture and Cycladic style, that is painted in blue and white, small domes and built with stone materials. Some of them were built in the Byzantine times, while others are of modern construction. |
The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is probably the most famous church of Santorini. It is found in Fira and has a tall bell tower and a circular dome. Painted all in white, there is an alley with arches on the courtyard. The Cathedral was built in the 1820s and it was renovated after the earthquake that hit Santorini in 1956. Its mosaic floor dates from 1975.
The Catholic Cathedral is found in the Catholic quarter in Fira and it is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It doesn't resemble to the typical Cycladic churches as its colour is pale orange. Its has a tall bell tower which you can see from far away. After the earthquake of 1956, the church was renovated.
The church of Panagia Episkopi is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1100 A.D. by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. It is built with marble and stone while it has some nice wax decorations. Many of its frescoes date from the 11th century. Every year, on August 15th, there is a big festival in this church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The Monastery of Prophet Elias is built on the highest point of the island, at an altitude of 565 m. It was built in 1712 and, along its history, it has played an important role for theb island. In the 18th and the 19th centuries, the Monastery owned a fleet and practiced trade in the Mediterranean, which gave an economical prosperity to Santorini. In the early 19th century, it ran a school for Greek language and literature. Today, the Monastery hosts an interesting ecclesiastical museum and its location is ideal as a trekking destination.
