Pegasus Suites in Santorini - Santorini Excursions

Santorini is considered one of the world's top tourist destinations. Apart from picturesque villages built right on the edge of cliffs, wild volcanic landscapes and gorgeous beaches, Santorini also has other sights worth to visit. A tour to the famous Volcano is a must while you are on the island. This Volcano was erupted in about 1600 BC and caused the destruction of the Minoan civilizations in Akrotiri and in the island of Crete.

We can find many stories associated to the destructive eruption of this Volcano. One speculation says that this volcanic eruption caused the destruction of Atlantis, the mythical wealthy town that some scientists associate to Santorini. There is also a speculation that this eruption caused the Exodus of Moses from Egypt. The Volcano of Santorini is still active today. The craters are found in the islands of Palea and Nea Kameni and many boats operate tours there.

Apart from the Volcano, Santorini is famous for probably the oldest Minoan civilization in Greece. The Minoan settlement of Akrotiri used to be very prosperous until the volcanic eruption completely destroyed it. Among the items found in this site, there are pieces of jewelry, pottery, small statues, beautiful frescoes and remains of ancient buildings. Most of these findings are exhibited today in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira.

For nature lovers, Santorini is a great destination for trekking. Its wild landscape and its narrow paths set the schedule for many trekking tours. There is a large network of hiking trails on the island, which pass through vineyards, villages and barren areas. The most popular route is the one to the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, built on the highest mountain peak of Santorini. From there, you can have amazing views of the Aegean Sea and the Caldera.
