Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cycladic group of islands. It is actually not a single island, but an archipelago of volcanic islands. Santorini has a surface area of approximately 73 sq. km. and a coastline of 69 km. The semi-circular shape of Santorini today is due to the violent seismic and volcanic activities in the ancient times. |
The famous volcanic eruption of Thera, which dates back to the Bronze Ages, resulted in the crescent shape that the island has today. As for the soil, Santorini doesn't have any greenery but it is rather a rocky and barren island. However, the ground is pretty fertile due to its volcanic elements. That is why Santorini is an important producer of wine and other agricultural products.
