Santorini Greece is a small, volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea. In the ancient times, Santorini was known with three names: Kalliste, Strongili and Thera. Today Santorini is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Santorini is known for the enormous volcanic eruption which completely ruined the ancient Minoan civilization. With an active volcano till today, Santorini
has an enchanting beauty. |
The destructive eruption of the volcano in the 16th or 17th century B.C. gave rise to enormous waves, which reached Crete and completely destroyed the Minoan civilization. Numerous theories and speculations also link Santorini to Atlantis, the fabled city that was destroyed in a single day and night by the anger of the gods. It is believed that Atlantis was destroyed by an earthquake. As Santorini has startling proofs of seismic activity over the years, this has given rise to its connections and resemblance with Atlantis.
Today Santorini is famous for its still active volcano and the most romantic sunset in the world. Walk along the paved streets of Oia and in the sunset time stand and watch the sun that gets a pale orange colour. Many other picturesque villages are found in Santorini, such as Fira, Imerovigli and Kamari. The beaches of Santorini are also amazing. The most famous are the Red beach and Cape Columbo.
In the south part of the island, there is the archaeological site of Akrotiri, an excellent sample of Minoan civilization with many important findings. Some of its findings are hosted in the Museum of Thera while others have been moved to the National Museum of Greece.
Although Santorini is included in the most popular destinations in the world, the fortunate thing is that is has not lost its picturesque character. The island has not been eroded by mass tourism and once there, you will feel a positive vibe all around you. The locals are welcoming to foreigners and make sure you feel at home. Small taverns cook traditional recipes and cafeterias have great views to the sea and the volcano. Bars and clubs are perched on the rocky edges of the villages and invite you for an unforgettable night out. Come to Santorini for the holidays of your life!
