Santorini has many museums to revive and restore its long tradition and history. There are museums of every kind on Santorini and people can enjoy a tour around them.

The Museum of the Prehistoric Thera is located in Fira, the capital village of the island. This museum houses plant fossils from prehistoric times, marble statues, pieces of ceramics with paintings on them and some findings from the excavations in Akrotiri.

The Archaeological Museum of Fira hosts sculptures and inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period, clay figurines and vases from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods found on the island. You can also find many items from the excavations from Akrotiri here. Among the most famous exhibits, there are an amphorae of geometric decoration and the huge volcanic rock lifted by the athlete Eumastas.

The Folklore Museum of Fira is housed in a special cave-like house that was built in 1861. This lovely museum is the product of the individual effort of the local Manolis Lignos and contains items connected to life and tradition in Santorini. Particularly, the museum includes workshops of wine making, a library with rare books and documents, a gallery with works of local artists and old agricultural tools. In the courtyard of the museum, there is the lovely chapel of Agios Konstantinos.

The Megaron Gyzi is a beautiful, old mansion in the Catholic Quarter of Fira that has been converted into a museum and a cultural center. Among its displays, there are engravings from the 16th to 19th centuries, traditional customs and maps of the Cycladic islands. This museum also has a photographic gallery that shows Santorini before and after the great earthquake of 1956. In summer, Megaron Gyzi organizes piano competitions and many other cultural events.

The Koutsogiannopoulos Wine Museum is an interesting place to visit to get a view of the long traditional the island has in wine making. This museum shows the history of wines on Santorini from 1660 to 1950. Through the subterranean paths of the Volcan Wines winery, founded in 1880, the visitor can see tools dating from the 17th century, old barrels, wine presses and many other exhibits. At the end of the tour, you can taste some local wine. The tours are accompanied with audio-visual effects and a guide.

The Naval Museum of Oia shows the marine history of the island, mainly from the 19th century. It has various marine exhibits, including ship models, marine tools, old photos, rare documents and a small library. It is housed in the elegant mansion of Ntina Birbili.
