The beautiful churches of Santorini have been built according to the traditional Cycladic architecture, with whitewashed walls and blue-painted round domes. They were photographed millions of times but never stop to amaze and charm every visitor. Panagia Episkopi This beautiful church is one of the few preserved Byzantine churches of the island of Santorini and it is considered as one of the most important church of its kind. It is standing south of the area of Mesa Gonia and was founded in 1100 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. It survived all the invasions of the island and all the earthquakes. The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin and it religious feast is celebrated in the 15th of August. Wonderful icons dating from the 12th century are decorating the church's walls. Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral This cathedral was built in 1827 and restored after the devastating earthquake of 1956. It is standing in the centre of Fira, capital of Santorini and has wonderful frescoes made by a local artist called Christoforos Assimis. Catholic Cathedral Located in the Catholic neighbourhood of Fira, capital of Santorini Island, this cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches of the island. It was rebuilt (with its bell tower) after the earthquake of 1956 and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Prophet Elias Monastery This Monastery stands nearby the village of Pyrgos, in a wonderful area from where the view is breathtaking. It was built in the early 18th century and has a small museum exhibiting various ecclesiastical items, Byzantine manuscripts and old books. Agios Nikolaos Monastery Situated between the village of Firostefani and the one of Imerovigli, this monastery was built in 1651 and is dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, Zoodochos Pigi (Source of Life) and Saint Nicholas. Superb Byzantine icons of Saint Nicholas can be seen in the church of the monastery. | ||||||||
