While in Santorini, there are different means of transportation to move around. First of all, there are taxis which run all over the island. Besides taxis, there are suburban buses that go to different destinations. Buses cover almost the whole of the island and the itineraries are pretty frequent, while they are more in summer. Also note that there is a cable car network connecting the port of Santorini in Athineos to Fira, the capital village of the island. |
Probably the most comfortable way to get around on Santorini is to rent a car or a motorbike for your own convenience. There are many car rental agencies mostly in Fira, Oia, Kamari and the other tourist resorts on the island. The road network of Santorini is pretty good but at some points it needs extra attention, as the road gets narrower. Streets on Santorini are well-signaled but you are advised to carry a map with you.
However, the most traditional way to get around on Santorini is by mule. There mules were an essential means in the past to climb people and carriage up the difficult tracks of the island, but now they are mostly used for tourist reasons. It is considered a must experience on Santorini to try a ride on a mule.
